CM99/00 Revisited: The 2019/2020 Premier League managers

We’re coming up towards the 20th anniversary of the release of Championship Manager: Season 99/00. This was the first full game from the Championship/Football Manager series that I played, when I was nine years old, and I still have very fond memories of it.

Over the next year or so, I will revisit CM99/00 in an occasional series of articles right here on Fuller FM. Who knows, I might even write up a career story somewhere down the line.

In this first post, I will look at the 2019/2020 Premier League and English Football League managers and use CM99/00 to see what they were up to 20 years ago. I’m using the largest possible database with all leagues loaded, so if they’re in the game… they’re in the game. (Oh, wait, wrong franchise.)

This was, of course, inspired by Dave Black and his brilliant CM97/98 blog. Every year for the last few seasons, he’s looked at what contemporary Premier League managers were doing on Championship Manager 97/98. For example, this article shows last season’s PL bosses when they were 21 years younger.

Lyn On Me: Season Review 2022

It took Marit Enstad three seasons to get Lyn 1896 promoted from the 2. divisjon, having almost endured the humiliation of being relegated in her second year. Lyn’s patience was rewarded in 2022, when they returned to the 1. divisjon for the first time since the original club collapsed 12 years earlier.

Marit’s men could now look forward to rubbing shoulders with teams such as Bodø/Glimt, Fredrikstad and Tromsø. Would they survive in the second tier, or even thrive? Or would they immediately crash back down to earth with a bump?

You know the drill by now. This Season Review will take us through all of Lyn’s league and Cupen results and look at various stats before the manager details her plans for next year. If you want to read the full story of this season, click on the links to find Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5.

Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 5

It’s been another season to remember at Lyn 1896. Having won their 2. divisjon group in 2021, they are now chasing a second straight promotion – from the 1. divisjon to the Eliteserien. More than a decade after the club dropped out of Norway’s top tier, a return could be on the cards!

If you’re wondering how Lyn got into this position, you can find the most recent chapter of this story right here. When you’re ready, we’ll join Marit Enstad for the season finale… Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 5”

Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 4

Welcome back to Norway, where Lyn are halfway through their first season in the 1. divisjon. Despite starting off slowly, recent results have picked up, and now Marit Enstad’s men are setting their sights on back-to-back promotions.

I’ll now hand over to Marit as we pick up the story in July 2022, following the mid-season break. You can find Part 3 here if you want to catch up on that first. Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 4”

Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 3

Who knew that the 1. divisjon would provide a different challenge to the 2. divisjon? Marit Enstad and Lyn 1896 have endured a rough start to life in the second tier following last season’s promotion, and there are already doubts over whether they can stay up.

Fortunately, the Cupen has offered the Bastionen some solace. Lyn have made it to Round 3 for the first time under Marit’s stewardship, and now they have the chance to slay Eliteserien opposition.

Feel free to read through Part 1 and Part 2 if you haven’t yet caught up with the story. If you have, then read on to see if Marit’s men can beat the odds… Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 3”

Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 2

It’s March 2022, and there is an excited atmosphere at the Bislett. After signing eight new players over the winter, Lyn 1896 are ready for their first season back in the second tier since the original club was dissolved 12 years ago.

With the Bastionen cheering them on all the way, can Lyn pick up from where they had left off in the 2. divisjon – and make a strong start in the 1. divisjon? Let’s see how Marit Enstad and the boys get on… Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 2”

Lyn On Me: Season 4, Part 1

Hmm… it’s a new season in my Football Manager 2019 blog save, but the title image looks a bit different to last time. Is that because…

Why, yes, it is! After spending three years trying to get out of the 2. divisjon, Lyn 1896 have finally made it into the 1. divisjon! They are now just one more promotion away from a long-awaited return to Norwegian football’s top tier – the Eliteserien.

Barely a year after almost getting sacked, manager Marit Enstad has overseen a title-winning 2021 season in the latest chapter of Lyn’s resurgence. Now she’s made some big signings to try and build on that success – and maybe inspire another promotion in 2022.

So, Marit, what exactly have you been up to?

Lyn On Me: Season Review 2021

Marit Enstad’s reign as Lyn 1896 manager has already had its up and downs. Her first season nearly ended with Lyn reaching the 2. divisjon play-offs… but her second went spectacularly wrong and almost delivered an unexpected relegation!

Nobody really knew what to expect at the Bislett in 2021 then. Marit kept faith in a large part of her squad, hoping that a few additions would turn an underperforming team into a unit capable of challenging for promotion again.

This Season Review will assess Lyn’s results and statistics from the past year before looking ahead to the next one. There will be huge spoilers below, so make sure you’ve caught up on the story so far before continuing. You can find Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4 and Part 5 in the links provided.

Lyn On Me: Season 3, Part 5

This is it, folks. We’re coming to the end of the 2021 season, and this looks like being the year in which Marit Enstad and Lyn 1896 finally make it out of the 2. divisjon!

Lyn enter the end-of-year run-in standing top of the table. You can read about their most recent results here to get yourself caught up before the big finale.

When you’re ready, read on to see if Marit’s men can get the job done – and book their place in the 1. divisjon for next season. Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 3, Part 5”

Lyn On Me: Season 3, Part 4

This Football Manager 2019 adventure looks like it’s about to get a lot more exciting. Some impressive results in the previous chapter (which you can read here) have turned Lyn 1896 into serious challengers for promotion to the 1. divisjon.

There are 10 games left in the 2021 season, and Lyn are sitting pretty in their 2. divisjon group. The summer transfer window has come and gone with little movement at the Bislett, so Marit Enstad is clearly happier with her squad now than she was this time last year! Will stability be the key to success?

Just like last season, I’m going to split the run-in into two chapters. Part 4 is all about Lyn’s attempts to consolidate a strong position, and we’ll then find out in Part 5 whether they can seal the deal. Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 3, Part 4”
