FM Mythbusting: Being “FMed”

it-happensWe all love Football Manager, don’t we? Yet there is one complaint that always crops up year after year.

Here’s the scenario. You’ve just played through a match where your team has been absolutely dominant, for want of a better word. You’ve had 30 shots at goal, 60% of possession, an 85% pass completion rate… but the opposition won 1-0, scoring from their only shot in the entire game.

Congratulations, you have just been “FMed” (or “FM’d”, if you’d prefer to spell it that way). Now what?

You could assume that something’s wrong with Football Manager. You could even vent your frustration on social media, or on the Sports Interactive forums – or even on Reddit, where grown adults turn into temperamental teenagers with anger management issues. I mean… a result like that would never occur in real football, would it?

What if I told you that this actually happens more often than you think? What if I pointed out that your FM team’s inability to turn ‘dominance’ into a result might actually be down to your tactical decisions?

This article will not tell you how to stop your team from being “FMed” ever again. This will simply explain why such lop-sided results can happen in Football Manager and in real football. It’s time for some FM mythbusting… Continue reading “FM Mythbusting: Being “FMed””

Lyn On Me: Season 6, Part 3

Lyn 1896’s return to the Eliteserien hasn’t turned out to be the baptism of fire many people were expecting. With nearly a third of the 2024 season gone, they’re in a healthy lower-mid-table position, and they’re still going strong in the Cupen. You can read more about that in Part 2 if you haven’t already.

This next chapter will take us to the halfway point of the Eliteserien season, as Marit Enstad’s team look to consolidate their top-flight status and make further Cupen progress.

This is where it all falls apart now, isn’t it? Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 6, Part 3”

Lyn On Me: Season 6, Part 2

Lyn 1896 fans have been counting down the days until their team returns to the Eliteserien after a 14-year absence. That time has finally come for them and for Marit Enstad’s squad.

Pre-season has been a hectic one at Lyn. Having turned professional following promotion to Norway’s top flight, they’ve brought in nine new players, and at least one potential wonderkid has emerged from the Under-16s. If you’d like to know more, you can read Part 1 in the link attached.

Now let’s see if Lyn can prove their worth in the Eliteserien and begin strongly. If not, then it could be a very long 2024 season ahead… Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 6, Part 2”

Lyn On Me: Season 6, Part 1

After a short break from blogging, I’m back with the latest installment of my Football Manager 2019 blog career with Lyn 1896.

As you can probably tell from the new title image, this is an exciting time at Lyn, as they’ve just been promoted to the Eliteserien! They’ll be squaring up with Norway’s biggest teams throughout 2024 as they look to consolidate their top-flight status. It won’t be easy, but I’m sure they can do it.

Let’s now catch up with manager Marit Enstad, who has heavily rebuilt her squad for the year ahead. Before we talk transfers, though, I hear she has some important news to share…

Lyn On Me: Season Review 2023

Even by my usual FM19 standards, 2023 has been quite a hectic year! This was Lyn 1896’s second season in the 1. divisjon, having just fallen short in the play-offs the first time around. Could Marit Enstad’s side better their 3rd-place finish and secure a spot in the Eliteserien, or would their promotion push stall?

This Season Review has the usual fare. Firstly, we’ll run through all the league and Cupen results, look at our best players, and analyse some key statistics. Marit will then explain her transfer plans for next season before we finish off with a quick round-up with what else went on in Norwegian football.

If you’d like to relive this campaign in greater detail, you can revisit all six chapters in the links attached: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5 and Part 6. I’ve also written an extra article – The Football World in 2023, where you can read about who won the various major competitions during the first five years of this save.

Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 6 – PROMOTION PLAYOFF

If you’ve been reading “Lyn On Me” from the start, you’ll probably know that I usually publish five chapters per year (excluding the end-of-season reviews). However, the 2023 season has gone into extra-time for Lyn 1896.

It’s been a long, hard year at the Bislett, and now Lyn find themselves in a promotion play-off. If they can win a two-legged tie against the 14th-placed team from the Eliteserien, Marit Enstad and her team will be playing regular top-flight football next season. (If you haven’t read Part 5 yet, I’d suggest going back there to see how Lyn got to this stage before reading on.)

Three more hours of football stand between Lyn and the Eliteserien. Can they pull it off? We’re about to find out… Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 6 – PROMOTION PLAYOFF”

Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 5

As summer turns into autumn, the 2023 Norwegian football is nearing its thrilling conclusion. Lyn 1896 are once again in pursuit of promotion from the 1. divisjon, but there’s still lots of work to do if they are to reach the promised land of the Eliteserien.

Feel free to catch up on Part 4 if you haven’t already. Once you’re ready, get yourself comfortable, because this is THE longest chapter in the Lyn story so far (at over 3,400 words long). Make of that what you will.

Okay, Marit Enstad… it’s down to you now. Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 5”

Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 4

Lyn 1896 are into the second half of their second season in Norway’s second tier. Naturally, they will enter August 2023 sitting in… 7th place.

It’s been another mixed campaign so far for Lyn in the 1. divisjon. Away form has been excellent, but Marit Enstad’s side are really struggling at home. If you read through Part 3, you’ll know exactly what I mean.

This stage of the campaign is when the campaign really heats up, not least because the summer transfer window is about to close. Speaking of that, let’s go straight to Marit, who has news of a departure from the Bislett… Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 4”

Lyn On Me: The Football World in 2023

Welcome back to the latest installment of my Football Manager 2019 blog story “Lyn On Me”.

I’ve got something a little bit different for you today. As we’re now five seasons into the save, I thought I’d take a break from chronicling Lyn 1896’s fortunes and instead look at what’s been happening in the wider footballing world.

What is the state of play in the summer of 2023? Who’ve been the big winners and losers across the major European leagues and competitions over the last five years? What about the World Cup and the various continental championships? All those questions will be answered below… Continue reading “Lyn On Me: The Football World in 2023”

Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 3

Things are never straightforward with Lyn 1896. If you thought they started last year slowly, then you must see what they were like in the early stages of the 2023 season. (You can read all about that in Part 2.)

After some tricky opening fixtures, though, Marit Enstad has got her team back on track as they head into the summer. Can they continue their steady rise up the 1. divisjon standings? Continue reading “Lyn On Me: Season 5, Part 3”
